Fall 2019 Family Photo Outfit Inspiration | What to Wear Roundup

Fall- it’s time for cozy sweaters, plaid, pumpkin patches, apple cider, and colorful leaves. This also means it’s family photo season!!

This also means…. you have to shop for outfits. A few months ago I took a poll on my Instagram and asked all the moms what the hardest part about family photos was to them… almost unanimously it was choosing outfits. That’s why I started this series- each season I post some outfit ideas, inspiration, tips, and links to some cute clothes you could buy for photos.

What I love about fall family photo outfits is the ability to LAYER. Layering brings so much texture and interest to your portraits!

I also love the colors that fall brings- many of them look so flattering! Choosing a color scheme can be hard for some. If you want the photos to go on your walls- choose something that can fit easily into your home decor. Pinterest has SO many ideas for color palettes- so jump over here to my fall family photo outfit inspiration board for more ideas.

Outfit Combos

As I was searching for color schemes on Pinterest I came across a pin from the most AMAZING website.  Guys. I would be wasting my time if I put together combos here because they did it in the best way possible. It’s so easy- they linked all of the products in each photo and the combinations are simple and gorgeous. #newfavewebsite haha

Like wow- just look!

As you are looking at those photos- looks how many patterns there are. (I only see one!) Now look how many TEXTURES there are. Texture is like 3D pattern. And it’s amazing.  There are knit, ruffles, velvet, lace, leather, etc.

But what if I want to shop in person?

I totally get that- you want to try it on first!

My number one tip is to hit up one BIG store first. Like Target or Old Navy. Why? Because they often have similar colors in everyone’s department. Mom go try on all of your selections first. This will simplify things so much for you! If you love what you are wearing then you will most likely like the photos more.

As for patterns- if you struggle to mix them then only choose one pattern. Maybe you wear the pattern and then choose everyone’s outfits out of that pattern. OR just don’t do any patterns. You can still have beautiful, styled outfits without having any pattern. (Guess what the secret is to a styled outfit?…. Layers and accessories!)

Choose the one you love best on you then head over to the men’s section. It probably has a complimenting color. Put Dad in jeans, a nice button up in a color that compliments your dress/shirt/whatever, and nice shoes. Then go to the children’s section and finish up. Don’t overthink it.

Add a few accessories- earrings for you, a vest for little sister, knit tights for baby sister, a little sweater for brother.

Always remember…. if you are one of my clients I am MORE than happy to come and help you select clothes whether it’s looking at the clothes in your closet or on the racks at TJ Maxx.
