Planning family photos can feel like a lot, especially when you’re trying to coordinate outfits, kids, and schedules. Many Treasure Valley moms tell me they feel pressure for everything to go perfectly during their session.

But after photographing so many families around Boise and the Treasure Valley, I’ve learned something important. The things parents worry about the most usually have very little impact on the photos.

If you have family photos coming up, here are three common session “mistakes” that really don’t matter at all.

1. Your Kids Aren’t Smiling

One of the biggest worries parents have before a session is whether their kids will smile or cooperate. The truth is, the best photos rarely come from perfectly posed smiles.

Some of the most meaningful images happen when kids are laughing, talking, hiding behind their parents, or just being themselves. Those little personality moments often become parents’ favorite photos because they feel real.

During family sessions, I focus on interaction instead of forcing smiles. When kids are relaxed and engaged with their parents, the natural smiles usually come on their own.

2. Your Baby Cries During the Session

If you’re bringing a baby to your family photos, there is a very good chance they might cry at some point. And that is completely normal.

Babies need breaks. Sometimes they need to be fed, held, or soothed for a few minutes. A relaxed session always makes space for that.

In fact, some of the sweetest images happen right after a baby settles down and snuggles close to mom or dad. Those quiet moments often turn into the most meaningful photos from the entire session.

3. Your Kids Are Wild or Won’t Sit Still

A lot of parents apologize for their kids being “wild” during sessions. But movement is actually one of the best things for photos.

Running, spinning, climbing into mom’s arms, or chasing a sibling often creates natural laughter and connection. Instead of expecting kids to sit still the whole time, family sessions are designed to allow movement and play.

This is especially helpful for younger kids who simply aren’t meant to stay in one place for long.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Be Perfect

At the end of the day, family photo sessions aren’t about perfect behavior or perfectly posed smiles. They’re about capturing your family the way you really are in this season of life.

The laughter, the movement, the snuggles, and even the little chaotic moments are often the ones that matter most.
