When families reach out about booking a session, one of the first questions they ask is: “Where should we take our photos?” And honestly, I love that part of the planning process, because the location really does help set the tone for the session.
Over the years, I’ve found a handful of spots that I keep coming back to. They’re beautiful, relaxed, and just naturally lend themselves to the kind of heartfelt, connection-filled images I love to create. So today, I’m sharing three of my all-time favorite locations for family photos around the Boise area.
Boise River Greenbelt
This one is a classic for a reason. There’s just so much variety in one spot – shaded paths, open clearings, and of course, that peaceful stretch of river. It’s super accessible and works in just about every season. If your family loves nature but doesn’t want to wander too far, this spot is always a winner.
Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge
I’m always surprised by how quiet and peaceful this place feels. With wide open fields, soft walking paths, and the stillness of the lake in the background, it’s such a calming space. It’s especially great for families with young kids who want room to roam. The light out there is soft and dreamy, and there’s a real sense of stillness that adds something extra to every session.
Bogus Basin Mountain Meadows
If you’re up for a short drive into the mountains, this spot is worth it. In the warmer months, the meadows are full of life—tall grasses, wildflowers, and that open-sky feeling you can’t get in town. It’s a little more adventurous, but still totally family friendly. Perfect for sessions that feel like a getaway without needing to go far.
