How to Prep for Your Photoshoot in the Treasure Valley

Whether you’re celebrating your pregnancy with a maternity shoot in Boise, capturing the sweet newborn stage at home in Meridian, or planning your annual family photos in Eagle, a little prep goes a long way. As a Treasure Valley photographer, I’m here to walk you through exactly how to get ready so your session feels fun, relaxed, and totally you.

1. Outfits First, Always

What you wear matters, not because we’re aiming for perfection, but because the right outfit helps you feel confident and comfortable. Choose soft, neutral tones like cream, sage, taupe, or dusty pink. These colors photograph beautifully in the natural settings around Star, Middleton, and Boise.

For local outfit finds, I recommend:

  • Hope Ave (Meridian) for mama dresses and soft textures
  • Bohme (Boise) for boho-chic vibes
  • Old Navy (Meridian) for affordable and coordinating kids’ looks
  • The Village at Meridian with great options for the whole fam

Pro tip: Lay everything out a few days before. Try it on, snap a mirror pic, and adjust as needed.

2. Prepping Little Ones (and Grown-Ups Too)

Tell your kiddos what to expect in a way that’s fun. Say, “We’re going to play, snuggle, and take some special pictures!” Bring snacks, a comfort item, or a reward. Ice cream after the session always works. Remind your partner that the goal isn’t perfect smiles, it’s genuine connection.

3. Rest, Hydrate & Take Your Time

If we’re shooting in the evening, make sure everyone’s well-rested and has had a light meal. Arrive early so no one feels rushed. This is especially important with young kids or expecting mamas.

4. Pack a Little “Just in Case” Kit

Toss in a few essentials:

  • Water bottles
  • Baby wipes
  • Lip balm
  • Hairbrush
  • Backup diaper, pacifier, or burp cloth for newborn sessions

If we’re out in the foothills or a Middleton field, these little things save the day.

5. Relax. You’re in Good Hands

Let go of expectations and let the real moments unfold. I’ll guide you with gentle prompts, play-based posing, and all the patience. Your job is to show up, love on your people, and enjoy the time together.
